Day 11 Moriarty, NM to Santa Rosa, NM
We started the day with a great breakfast at the Comfort Inn in Moriarty. We met a nice gent (dressed like a cyclist) & we chatted a bit. He was previously a professional cyclist and now he is the one that drives the photography/video motorcycle during races. You see those guys at the Tour de France and being experienced makes all of the photographers want to be on his rig. He was from Iowa City, so of course we talked about our upcoming group ride in the RAGBRAI. The people you meet 🙂
We put most of our clothes on because the temps this morning were in the 30’s. It still doesn’t make us wish we didn’t send those cold weather clothes home. The wind shifted from 50 MPH gusts last night, to a 10-20 MPH headwind, that stayed in our faces all day. The prevailing winds are supposed to be from the west…but
On the way out of town we saw them replacing the Whiting Bros Gas Station Sign. This is the last Whiting Bros left on Route 66. We stopped by Lisa’s truck stop but didn’t make it to the brewery that makes my new favorite Alien Beer. We did see an alien near the Roswell sign. That is another side trip, someday.
About 12 miles in we needed a break, so we pulled into the rest stop at the top of a hill. That is where we met three cool guys and their dogs. Jerimiah (sorry Dudes, I can’t remember your names) was super friendly, they were trying hard to get a ride to Ashville, SC to play music and hang out. We had a great chat, they were interesting, had a great “way” about them, and on a great adventure themselves. We wished them well and they promised to beep if they passed us. Later in the day a semi passed us and beeped, we both hoped it was the “guys” on their way East.
We stopped by the famous Clines Corners, they carried every Route 66 trinket & trash ever made. When we were parking our bikes to get some lunch, we saw one of “our people.” We waved and have an immediate commonality, bike riding. We met a rider named Tom von Kaenel, who left SC eight weeks ago and was riding all the way to Alaska. He told us about a terrible accident he had in the Pyrnese Mountains in France four years ago. It was life altering because an Army Major got him medivaced to a place that could get him the care he needed. Tom went on to tell us that he is riding to give back to those who have served in the armed forces. There are some incredibly sad stories about our service men & women returning with PTSD. Tom was a special person, and when we have some time, in the next few days we want to read about his foundation http://www.sea2sea.org. We shared a nice lunch and some stories and big goodbye, wishing each other a safe journey, with blessings.
The sights along our journey today were long hills, and much less dramatic views…
The day was full of winds, more climbing that we were ready for, and some terrific people. In addition to that we had our first flat. Jeff took care of it and we were back on the road in 45 minutes. We rode and rode and rode and finally saw Santa Rosa signs. YAHOOOOO!!!!! We took the first exit for picture opportunities along Route 66, after spending all day on HWY 40.
We had 5 miles to our hotel and were spent after 70 plus miles. My bike started shaking and I had a flat tire. Ahead of us was the biggest hill we’ve seen all day, and our hotel was miles down the road. Jeff filled up my tire and we made it to the hotel in time to throw in a load of laundry and have a nice meal at the Silvermoon Cafe, operating since 1959.
We rode for 9 hours and 4 minutes. We climber 2,400 feet. We had headwinds of 10-20 MPH. We rode 82 miles and burned 3,100 calories.
Two days in a row of personal bests for Ellen; yesterday, climbing over 4,000ft, and today, over 80 miles. We also hit the 500 mile mark today. That’s 25% of the way already!
Off to Tucucari in the morning, and the Blue Swallow Motel, a Route 66 Treasure.
Income today = $0.00 Must still be in a recession!
Way to go Ellie! To do two days in a row of personal bests is huge. I bet your legs are feeling mighty whipped today. Thanks for the fun blog. Woke up to no wind today for the first time. I hope it finally dies down for you two.
Tim and I are following your blog…you inspire me to get my butt off the couch and get moving!
I just joined your adventure today after getting your blog from Judy Hauser at golf Tuesday. I take Christys class also and talked to you just before you left. What a great adventure. Went back to the begging of the blog and am now all caught up. Jane Richards
Eighty one miles!! Way to make tracks!! Congrats on your PRs Ellen. Loved the pix of Santa Fe staircase but my new fav is the back HO. Really funny like something out of the Red Green show. Share a typical dinner meal with us. Are you eating like horses at the end of the day?!
The sites, the souvenir shops and the stories make this a real page turner. Glad you are able to document and share your trip with such great pictures and real time remembrances. Good thing you didn’t get that flat going downhill – go speed racers!
It is really windy here but warm.Love reading about your travels. Prayers for a safe journey and experience. God bless.
I have to give most of my praise to Ellen today!! I can’t even imagine the determination she had to ride 80+ miles in cold and windy weather. You go girl!! I am sure she is hanging in there for her “man”. You two are a real team:o) Love the pics!
I’m amazed you got this far on the trip before your first flat. We had 15 between Flagstaff and Santa Rosa. There were three of us, though, and some of those were in Bob trailer tires. I had 2 of my 3 on the Moriarty-Santa Rosa day. My husband said that maybe they clean the I-40 shoulder of the tire debris after the winter. We were fortunate in not having such a strong headwind on our Moriarty to Santa Rosa day. Still, because my husband broke a spoke on the downhill exit off 40 at Santa Rosa (took a long time to put in a Kevlar replacement), we were getting near sunset as we crossed through SR. When I saw that huge hill up to the east side of town, I said, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” We camped at the SR campground & walked to a Denny’s for dinner. The next day we spent much of the morning at the car museum and had lunch at the Silver Moon. Hope your ride to Tucumcari is better! Loved the Blue Swallow. The owners were really nice and let us use their garage (didn’t have one of the rooms with a garage) to store our bikes and trailers. We all bought shirts there and wore them to our end-of-the ride celebration dinner at the Boot Hill Saloon in Vega, TX.
Your pictures really bring back the memories….
What an awesome day for you 2. Once in a lifetime adventure. The views, pics and folks you meet are great memories. Went to Tom’swebsite, pretty cool, will donate to his cause. Thanks for all the sharing. Stay safe. Love you 2.
I imagine sometimes you think/dream about your hot tub and how it’d feel to just sink into it at the end of the day, and other times just flop on a bed. What a day. What a journey. Bask in the glow of what you accomplished yesterday.
Off to Tucumcari today, and it brought to mind a trucker song, not realizing the title was “Willin'” — even more appropriate because each day you two too are “willin’ to be movin'”
“Willin'” by Steve Earle
I been warped by the rain, driven by the snow
Drunk and dirty and don’t ya know
And I’m still willin’
Out on the road late last night
Seen pretty Alice in every headlight
Alice, Dallas Alice
I’ve been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonopah
I’ve driven every kind of rig that’s ever been made
I’ve driven the back roads, so I wouldn’t get weighed
If you give me weed, whites and wine
And you show me a sign
And I’ll be willin’ to be movin’
Love and big hugs, Mary
Just remember. …you guys got this! Wow! Sleep well and safe travels!
Can’t believe your at 25% already Congrats love the stories & pictures Keep em coming. God Bless
Prayers for the best rest and rejuvenation after your long day. What amazing life stories you are encountering. Hoping the winds will be better. Ours are still gusting daily here, but I’m not riding!
500 miles! You two are awesome! Love reading about your day and so grateful you continue to make your destination safely each evening. Truly enjoying all the pictures and signs from Old Rte 66. :-). God Bless.
